Snap, Crackle, Pop!

When I think of childhood cereal memories, I think of these guys...

Snap! Crackle! Pop!

Not only did Rice Krispies cereal make fun noises in the
milk, but it also made for delicious Rice Crispy Squares!

I really wanted to try making chocolate and
candy rice crispy squares instead of the plain
white with marshmallow ones.

I wanted these to have candy too! Reese's Pieces
Trail Mix, and M&M minis!!!

1/3 cup butter over medium heat

add in 1 whole bag of marshmallows until melted

When the mixture is melted, remove from heatthen
add a whole box; 8 cups of Rice Krispies cereal

Stir really well

Now it's time to add the candy!!!

M&M minis

chocolate-peanut-almond-sunflower-raisin trail mix

Reese's Pieces

And if you can avoid eating the mixture as is, transfer it over to a baking dish
Press the crispies firmly down with a spatula, creating a nice flat top.

Let it cool for a couple hours before cutting or eating. Rice Crispy Squares always taste better the next day once it has time to settle and the marshmallows firm up.

And a little close up of everything packed in there...

Question 1: What was your favorite childhood cereal growing up? Any fun memories?

Question 2: Have you made rice crispy squares before? Or used cereal in your baking?

  1. those rice krispie treats are LOADED! Love it!

I actually use rice krispies often to make "scotcheroos". Which is similar, but uses peanut butter instead of marshmallows. And has a layer of butterscotch and chocolate on top... they're like crack.

  2. I loved fresh rice krispie treats when I was younger. There was something magical about the warm gooeyness that was ever so enticing. My grandmother always seemed to make the best; she said her secret ingredient was love and I definitely think that makes all the difference. But man, yours are loaded! I've only ventured into adding sprinkles, but you take it to a WHOLE new level.

    Have a lovely day!

This must be the most colourful and tasty bar, ever.

  4. Yowza! Those Rice Krispie treats are insaneeee. I used to make Rice Krispie squares all the time when I was younger, but mine were never as complicated [read: delicious] as yours. They were just the basic cereal, marshmellow, butter mixture.

As for favorite childhood cereals, Corn Pops, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Cap'n Crunch topped my list :)

  5. Those look amazing! I actually have never been the biggest rice crispy treat fan. I do like them, but it's kind of like pie. I like it, but I like other treats so much more!
I loved cereal as a kid! Every kind of cereal. I especially loved Lucky Charms. I would eat all of the cereal and leave the marshmallows for last.

  13. wow...those look divine.

My favorite childhood cereal was definitely cinnamon toast crunch!!! I ate so freaking much of it as a kid.

And no, I have never made rice krispies before, but I do love them. Haven't used cereal in my baking either. Gotta get on that!

  14. I used to like all the sugary ones...especially peanut butter Cap'n Crunch. I liked Grape-nuts too. But they made my mouth tired from chewing.

I like to make plain rice krispy treats and then dip them in chocolate and nuts. I also like to stir some melted nut butter in with the marshmallow!

  15. That is one healthy rice krispies square! I've never thought of putting trail mix in.

I think my favorite childhood cereal was frosted flakes. Now that I think of it, that stuff is all sugar! No fiber, no protein. I used to hate milk so that was the only way you could get me to drink milk, cause the sugar gets the milk all sweet & tasty :-D

  16. I think you added just about all my favorite things into one bit! YUM! I loved oat bran...ya not sure what kind of kid i was but I lived off oat bran :)

  17. When I wasn't vegan I use to loooove rice krispy squares! So good. None looked quite as delicious as yours though. :D

My favorite cereal as a child would have had to be Fruit Loops, Sugar Crisp, and Lucky Charms. Although.. the only reason I liked the Lucky Charms was because of the marshmallows. All the other stuff got left behind.

  18. I loved this post! I haven't had a rice krispie in sooooo loong. I know they are easy to make but I'm not sure I've ever tried. My friends mom would always have them on hand. Yours look better than any I've ever had! So much goodness :)

  21. I grew up on very simple and boring Kellog's corn flakes because my mum (always being the dental hygienist) wasn't a fan of the sugary stuff.

I've never made rice crispies but I have to admit that I can't stand marshmallows.. Ugh.. that taste and texture! ;)

  23. I recently made a dessert similar to rice crispy treats with brown rice puffs that didn't work as well so I need to get the right ones next time because those look amazing lady! I added chocolate chips and used brown rice syrup so they still tasted good...

My favorite cereal was cheerios or oats actually because my parents didn't allow sugary cereal at all. I don't miss it cause I never had it!

  24. this is so much fun :D

I used to like cocoa pops! And I loved this muesli type thing that had milk chocolate chips in, and I just ate those and left the actual cereal/dried fruit bits (:

I don't think I've ever had rice crispy squares! When I was little we used to just melt a big bar of chocolate, and then stir in cornflakes, or shredded wheat - it was amazing!

  34. These are some SERIOUS rice krispies treats! I love your mix-ins. Now all they need is some peanut butter. And maybe some coconut. Oh I need to make these.

I wonder what other kinds of cereal you could use to make marshmallow-y treats....hmmm. You've opened up the floodgates!

  35. These rice krispie treats are no joke! They look amazing!

I used to eat cereal every single day as a kid. My favorites were Honey Nut Cheerios, Captain Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Lucky Charms. Yep, I was a sugar addict - ha!

  47. Rice Krispy squares are AMAZING! I think my favorite childhood snack is puppy chow. Cereal is just the way to go!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Those look delicious! My favorite childhood treat was "puppy chow." It was soooo good! Chex, chooclate, and powdered sugar.

When we make rice crispies, we use the rice krispy cereal, peanut butter, sugar, and chocolate chips. We don't even use marshmallows; the pb holds it together and we melt the chocolate chips on top. SOO good!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yum! What a great way to kick rice krispie squares up a notch. ;) I would love to try putting a crumbled caramilk bar in these!

  50. Wow those rice krispie treats look SO GOOD!!! I love the idea of loading them up with stuff. Ia ctually had a rice krispie treat yesterday for the first time in ages, but it was not as good as those look!

  51. What a wonderful blog! I loved Cinnamon Toast Crunch growing up, but I also adored Rice Crispy Treat Cereal. So sugary, but so so good!

    ReplyDelete
  52. i always loved listening to my rice krispies.
i loved ALL sugar cereals but my mom only bought me "non colorful" ones like honey comb and golden grahams so that's what i get nostalgic for.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I loved eating Cream of Wheat for breakfast, just with a few packets of (white!) sugar, and some milk. I ate it that way all the time, which sounds so bland and kind of gross now.

I don't think I've ever made Rice Krispies treats before, but I've certainly eaten them plenty.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i definitely made those rice crispy treats when i was younger! i have made them with fruity pebbles and frosted flakes as well! i loved putting chocolate chips in them and eating them straight out of the oven when the chocolate would be all gooey and melted! definitely haven't eaten them in awhile but they do bring back good memories!
