False Negative

Sorry to be the Burden of Bad News...

Before I opened up the BioCard Test Kit my mom
and I had a little conversation that went like this...

Mom:  "Kels, how long do you need to eat gluten in order to get an accurate test result?"

Me: "Ummmmmmm ... WAIT that's probably the most important question huh!"

Mom: "Yea I just remember last time they said you needed to consume gluten for a period of a few weeks"

Me: "Well, let's Google it first okay?"

... elapse 5 minutes ...

Me: "F#CK ... at least 4-6 weeks!!!"

Mom: "Wait, hold on, this isn't too bad. We haven't opened the box yet"

Me: "Are you saying I should continue eating gluten daily until the end of the Summer, then take the test?"

Mom: "Yea, that way you won't get a False Negative and waste $50"

Me: "But everyone on Snacking Squirrel are waiting for my results, geez what a let down"

Mom: "No, they'll probably love seeing more cinnamon buns and muffins for awhile"

Me: "hmmmm I guess..."

... long pause ...

Me: "Haha, BioCard looks like a pregnancy test, it shows two lines if its positive and one if its negative. Hey maybe if I get a bloated tummy after all this, I can pretend i'm pregnant with a gluten baby"

Mom: "Why are you so weird?"

... mom grabs BioCard test kit and walks out of the room ...

Mom: "I think you've had enough time with the test kit"

The End

Hehe you're TOO cute Ms. Squirrel. Sorry that you couldn't get your results, but it's probably a good thing that you checked so you would get accurate readings.

Maybe you can do some non gluten free baking in the next few weeks and share those recipes with us :)

Aaahhh I'm sorry for you but at the same time I have to smile on your conversation with your Mum, it's so funny! But she is right about those cinnamon buns and muffins, we won't protest if you give us some more food porn! I can't wait! :*

Anonymous said... [reply]

Really funny post :)
I think we'll enjoy seeing you eating gluten :D

Monet said... [reply]

Yes...bring on the cinnamon rolls! I am sorry you have to wait a bit longer, but at least you will be able to get an accurate result.

lmao, I love the thunder thighs one!! You and your mom crack me up! I hope these 4 weeks go fast!!!

bahahaha you are so awesome <3

Girl I really, really worry about you eating gluten. As someone who has done permanent damage to my body b/c I am intolerant, but I went on eating it anyway, I hurt my body and I am 10 or 15 yrs older than you am speaking to you with both love, some age, and the wisdom of going thru hell w/ my food allergies for life...you dont need lines on a test or bloodwork or whatever it is to tell you what you already know instinctively: you are intolerant. If you continue to push your body, you can harm it. Maybe forever like I have done mine. I dont blog about the nitty gritty of my food intolerance symptoms but they suck. I never want to see anyone this way! I care so much about you and just want to see you healthy :) I hope you know I just want the best for you!!!

Ok..whew, had to tell you to just be careful :)

Last few posts about commenting, OCD, the whole bit...well, I have realized that I cant leave a comment for every blog every day, so I do a 1 to 5 post catchup and leave one big comment kinda like this one...which is a mouthful!

xoxo

This cracked me up Kelsey! "No, they'll probably love seeing more cinnamon buns and muffins for awhile" <- your mom is right!! :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

LOL, good thing your mom caught that!!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Good thing your mom thought of that eh? I don't think it ever would have crossed my mind.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Haha that convo cracked me up! I have persistent bloating and my mom and I always make fun of my baby. I agree that 4-6 weeks is a long time to keep up eating gluten, but at least you checked to be sure! I'm glad to hear you haven't had any symptoms yet though.

Anonymous said... [reply]

oh good, I'm glad you didn't waste the test! According to my doctor I needed to eat gluten 2x day, for at least 2 weeks, but preferably 1 month, before the test. I hope you stay symptom-free and have fun eating all the stuff you've been missing!

However, I do think Averie is right in her comment...I went back and forth for awhile on gluten, and it really messed up my digestion, possibly permanently. I also didn't have very bad symptoms. So be careful! and good luck :)

Don't worry love. 5 weeks is nothing, it will pass so quickly you won't even notice :)

You know what I found today? That appart from gluten I have to avoid dairy as well, because I m casein intolerant!
What on earth am I gonna cook for my blog? haha

Anonymous said... [reply]

Yeah...oh well! Now you can enjoy gluten for a while longer! Have some of your old favorites!

Your best advice said... [reply]

at least you found out first before wasting your money!

Kristy Sayer-Jones @ Southern In Law said... [reply]

Your mum sounds EXACTLY like mine!
Good thing your mum picked up on that, hopefully you get through the next couple of weeks symptom free! Or at least minimal symptoms.
It might take your body a little while to adjust - I just started eating bread again and felt so awful after eating my first sandwich - and I have no gluten/wheat intolerances.

Jess - Healthy Exposures said... [reply]

Glad your mom caught that before you did the test! Though that's too bad that you have to go THAT long before the test gives you proper results.
And I love your mom, lol. I feel like that is what mine thinks all the time, but doesn't go on and say :P

"Why are you so weird?"

ahahaha... too funny. My mom and I have similar conversations.

Lindsay @ http://pancakesnpajamas.blogspot.com/ said... [reply]

So funny. Your mom sounds like a riot...why are you so weird!?!?! :) Maybe we're the only ones that actually think about food babies!

Anonymous said... [reply]

lol! thanks for the convo.

Anonymous said... [reply]

That conversation is the funniest thing!!!

Interesting comments on this post as well...have you thought about just eating what you feel like for a while and not just eating something on purpose or avoiding something on purpose??...I don't know, I really can't talk (coming from the pig...). That' what I hope to aspire to one day ...and maybe your body will eventually balance itself out and tell you what it wants...

again - my aspirations and hopes (saying this while a giant carrot cake is in front of me...)

Meanwhile, send me some Planet Organic already!! :)

haha you are too funny!!! The "Hey maybe if I get a bloated tummy after all this, I can pretend i'm pregnant with a gluten baby" comment had me giggling at my computer :)

Laury@TheFitnessDish said... [reply]

Hahah....OMG, this post was too cute! Not laughing at the fact you need to suffer eating gluten for the next 5 weeks, but funny b/c you are so cute....I wouldn't mind seeing more Cinnamon Buns though ;-)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Aww I love this post!!! I really wish you the best with this testing. Remember to be mindful and relaxed. Sometimes if we think about something too much we can have a sort of placebo affect. Also, have you heard of rotation diets? I read a bit about it in a book I read about Ayurveda. They said they use them to incorporate foods back into people's lives that have allergies towards whatever food it may be.

XOXO to you and your tummy :D

Alisa said... [reply]

Nice save mom! But she should probably take a little responsibility for (be proud of) the weirdness she created :)

And yes, more muffin recipes are a good thing!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Aww I'm sorry you have to wait so long, that's got to be supremely irritating!! But at least you can have fun experimenting with gluten?

<3 <3

Chelsea said... [reply]

That's such a bummer that you have so much longer to wait before you can take the test! Hopefully these next few weeks will go by pain-free for you!

Bahaha my mom doesn't get my sense of humour either. She's always telling me I'm weird. Maybe it's backwards and it's our moms who are the weird ones, huh? ;)

Katie ♥ said... [reply]

Booooooooooooo for having to wait longer and it being 4 - 6 weeks for results, but thank heaven you found that out! Thats what moms are for!!

SO cute the conov between you and your mom, I can feel the love! lol! I love that you do have such a close relationship with your parents, thats so important!

Love you!

So are you going to keep up and continue for 4-6 weeks ?! xoxo

Anonymous said... [reply]

Too cute - good thing your mom noticed - but I am looking forward to your gluten containing eats for the next while!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hahahahaha! That is way too funny. It actually reminds me of a conversation that I would have with my mom. Of course, I'm not gluten intolerant but she still thinks I'm nuts :P

<3 Tat

Anonymous said... [reply]

I wonder how much gluten is okay for you to eat to gain accurate results without causing too much damage. Any ideas?

I like the way you recalled that conversation - well put.

Emily said... [reply]

hi kelsey- thanks so much for stopping by my blog! you are too sweet. looking forward to reading more posts from you! :-)

Anonymous said... [reply]

ha! you are too funny! you do whatever it is that you need to in order to make sure things turn out correctly. i will never complain about pics of baked goods :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I'm sorry you have to keep on going with the experiment for a little longer than you thought!

j3nn.net said... [reply]

LOL, love the Kels + Mom dialogue. Totally legit! :) Good thing she reminded you about that, thank goodness for momness!!

Sucks that you have to potentially eat something that makes you sick for 4 weeks+ but at least the test results will be more accurate. I implore you to get the small intestine biopsy, too. Just to be sure. The tummy is a sensitive subject. Good luck, and yes, I do look forward to the muffins. :)

hang in there Kelsey... do what you have to do to find out......then you can start getting things back to normal, what ever normal at that time is....

Anonymous said... [reply]

You are so funny and adorable! Thanks for transcribing your little convo with your mom. Don't worry about the test results- this just means that you get a few more weeks of enjoying your wheat gluten and hopefully not experiencing too many symptoms. I've been thinking of you and hoping for the best! xoxox

I have to confess i know next to nothing about Celiac's Disease. Your blog is going to be an education!

Anonymous said... [reply]

This is funny!!! love it. but on the plus side you will get the correct info! :)

ac said... [reply]

This is sooooo cool. We're learning about test strips (with 3 bands) in Molecular Biotechnology right now. Actually, for my final exam (in 3 days! Eeek!) I'm supposed to design one of those babies!! If I get a choice, I'm going to design one for Celiac's. And name the test after you. I'll call it the "Kelsonator Test for Celiac's". Or alternatively, I'll just call it "Squirrel". That may freak the hell out of all consumers, but hey...I draw inspiration from squirrels. Snacking ones in particular. LOL :-)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I don't know how you do it. I tried to eat gluten again and I could not do it. I was going to do the blood tests, the labs, even the biopsy if I needed to, but I could not continue to eat gluten once I stopped. I got about a week into eating gluten after it being absent from my diet for some time and my body could not handle it. I figured at that point it did not matter what the tests said. Needless to say you are one tough cookie for including gluten in your diet after not eating it for some time.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Haha.. you and your mom are amazing. That was hands down the best conversation I've heard (read?) all day.

I was definitely looking forward to the results but I'd much rather you have a true result than a false one so I totally don't mind waiting. It just makes things more suspenseful!

Anonymous said... [reply]

hahaha that is too funny! I promise I will be a patient reader and diligently wait until the end of the summer!

Anonymous said... [reply]

hahah kels you're hilarious :p
good luck :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

i totally feel your pain on not wanting to consume so much gluten since it probably makes you feel like crap! i was lucky that my dotor wanted me to do a stool test which he believes can detect the antibodies for longer. i have no ides!! i only ate gluten for one week and it was HELL. hope you get this figured out girl. i know it's not fun to have to deal with stomach issues

Anonymous said... [reply]

Oh Kelsey...you and your mom are TOO cute! I'm sorry to hear that you'll have to continue eating muffins and cinnamon rolls for awhile (or am i?). Enjoy more of them while you can!...or until you get a gluten baby! tehehehe :D

Gina; The Candid RD said... [reply]

That's rough. Or you could just do what I did, and forget the test and just cut it out anyway. haha, not the best idea, but since I'm an RD and I know I can do it right, I figured it was ok. Enjoy eating gluten while you can! Right?? I mean, take advantage!! :)

Heather Iacobacci-Miller said... [reply]

Haha, love the cartoon. I am so behind right now - hope you're doing well. Can't wait to get caught back up when I get home!

Anonymous said... [reply]

You two are so funny. A reality show in the making? I think so.

Krista said... [reply]

What a bugger! But at least you didn't open the kit, right? ;)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hey Kelsey!

I saw your comment on someone elses' blog in regards to getting tested for Celiac Disease. I'm sure you are pretty well researched, but I just wanted to confirm that in order to get a 100% diagnosis, you need three positives on three different tests:

- Celiac Marker Blood Test (anywhere in the range of 2-5 is somewhat normal, 5-20 is high, and I was 175+ when I tested...screaming positive!)

- Colonoscopy with biopsies (it will show irritation of the colon and possible polyps, I had 2, both benign)

- Endoscopy (this is where they go down your throat to inspect your duodenum, should show irritation and depleted cilia on your villi)

Let me know if you have any other questions! I ate gluten like it was my job about a month before my colonoscopy. My blood test was way before that when I was naturally not eating much gluten and my numbers were still off the charts. If you have it, your tests will show!
