Love the Hunger Monster

If you've seen the more recent Weight Watchers television
commericals, then you already know the face of the 'Hunger Monster'

I personally feel the Weight Watchers idea of 'fighting'
our hunger (or the monster that is our hunger?) is a dumb
message. Why? Well because if you try to fight the monster...

It will start hiding in your drawers creep around every corner, getting
louder and louder! And who knew my inner hunger had a uni-brow!

Breakfast started with a bowl of bananas,
strawberries, blueberries, kefir and cinnamon

Still hungry, I happily tried out the Peanut Toffee Buzz Clif
Bar which Lauren from Health on the Run said was her favorite!

She wasen't kidding, Peanut Toffee Buzz is YuMmMm

Let's play "Eat Through the Layers" again for
lunch with some Green Cuisine vegan take-out

Potato pancake, miso gravy tempeh, kale, broccoli, kabocha
squash, chili, arame, quinoa tabouli, and yam-walnut salad

Hey when the sun comes out I like to play...

In American Apparel glasses...with a Starbucks in hand :)

Oh and speaking of hungry monsters, how about a slice of
gluten free vegan cranberry chocolate cake to tame the cocoa-beast!

Since my stomach clearly had a whole in it somewhere.. I got myself
a nice big serving of creamy wild salmon salad in dairy-free mayo

And remember that it's normal for our appetites to have ebbs
and flows; sometimes we are hungry and sometimes we are full

Just like mother nature, our hunger isn't something to
mess with; If we don't honor and appreciate the signs our bodies
are sending us, it will turn on a dime and all hell will break loose

Question: Have you been respecting
your hunger signals lately? Or do you try
to fight them and end up regretting it later!

What a great post! I agree that it is so important to listen to our hunger cues - and not try to ignore them!!!

I think honestly if I were doing weight watchers, that stupid furry thing would show up in my nightmares. Not kidding...

I think it's awful because hunger isn't something we need to fight off- it's something we need to fix sensibly... way to go weight watchers- let's pushback that healthy eating revolution another couple decades, shall we?

You are adorable :)

I'm still trying to understand hunger cues @_@ Sometimes I can't tell if I have true hunger or more of a boredom/appetite-appeasing hunger. I wonder if there's an "Idiot's Guide to Hunger." ;)

If I go too long without eating, I start to feel sick! So, I've def been respecting the hunger cues.

I know the Hunger Monster is bad... but seriously, I wouldn't mind him creeping through my desk drawers (not because I was hungry though...)He is so cute! At least, he'd spice up my dull workday.

I love seeing people honor their hunger! I used to be absolutely horrible at listening to hunger cues. I would force myself to endure hunger or wait for a certain hour to eat, and I was completely miserable all the time. These days I'm much better at listening to hunger, and much happier as a result :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I totally agree that if you ignore your hunger pangs it will come back to bite you later because you'll eat double what you normally would have! And by "you" I mean everyone! :)

I find that anytime I try to fight the hunger monster it ends up backfiring in a serious way! It's best to listen to your body and feed it when it's hungry! My hunger monster and I are BFF. :)

I try to fight back as much as I can and eventually my hunger goes away. I do this because a lot of time I know its a craving, not real hunger. If the "hunger" goes away, then I know it was the right thing. Otherwise, if I drink water and the hunger is still there (and if I know I haven't eaten in a while ) then I eat of course.

PS. LOVE American Apparel!

first of all,
you are adorable!! Love the glasses. Lately, I have been pretty good about listening to my hunger signals and giving my body fuel when it needs it. In the past, not so much.

KELSEY!!!!!!!! Great post. It's funny because I was JUST thinking about this today--that I love hunger!! Well, healthy hunger. I don't think it's healthy to be full all the time, and I love being able to look forward to eating my next meal!

CLIF BARS! Guess WHAT! At work this past Friday, I picked up my very first Clif bar for FREE and thought about you! You had just written about them the day before, I think. Anyways it was exciting. I can't remember what your favourite flavour was but this one is Maple Nut... I couldn't be picky because it was free. We'll see how the taste-testing fares with me--ha!

xo Aletheia

P.S. Could you be any cuter and hipper with your glasses?!

Monet said... [reply]

I am loving your glasses...I have a very similar pair and always feel very hip when I wear them :-)

Hunger monster is inside me lately too and I try to honor it. It gets hard, not to feel anxious about it, but to eat when hungry feels great

Anonymous said... [reply]

Haha I LOVE this post! So cute!

Oh yeah you bet I've been encountering many many hunger monsters this past week! Of course I satisfy it with plenty of the needed chocolate and cookies!

This looks like an awesome Clif bar flavor...I will definitely have to give it a shot. I love a handful of almonds when the hunger monster peeks in!

Hahahaha, I love the hunger monster! Well, not when he's around me, but I think he's cute from a distance. :)

I never ignore my hunger. If I am truly hungry, my body is telling me something. Seems to talk to me a lot... hmm, lol.

I definitely can't let myself get too hungry or I will start feeling dizzy and light-headed. Listening to my body works better for me than ignoring it.

Love that photo of you! I try to eat when I am legitimately hungry, not just bored or eating for emotional reasons. I hate the feeling of being starving! That orange fuzzy dude is pretty cute though ;)

loved this post! and those glasses look great on you =)

I think the hunger monster is adorable, but I'm with you...respect and FEED your hunger!

I love your bowl of layers...I want a bowl of layers that has kabocha in it.

haha this post was great :] loved the monster pics. i sometimes do and sometimes don't honor my hunger cues. more recently, i have been. but in the past, i would not allow myself to eat except by the clock.
those glasses are adorable :] but not as adorable as you!! :]
xx

i hate the "fight your hunger" message, too. if our bodies are truly hungry, there is a reason for being so! i enjoy being a hunger monster :P
i love your green cuisine layers bowl - i want to go to one someday! haha

that chocolate cake looks sooo good!

I agree the "hunger monster" message is STUPID. we are not supposed to shove our hunger in a drawer (the pie, maybe) we're supposed to listen to it! I have gotten a lot better with doing that. The slightest twitch of hunger and I'm like ahh must go to the fridge! Haha also I am definitelyyy trying thta peanut toffee clif bar... I'm sure I'll like this one better than the Builder! I am just used to the "regular" clif bars =P

Anna said... [reply]

I can be bad about trying to ignore hunger and hoping it goes away, or trying to "mask" it with a piece of gum or a Diet Coke. I need to work on honoring my hunger I suppose!

I always respect my hunger signals. I think the biggest problem people have is they don't know the tricks of the trade! There are so many ways to attack an unhealthy hunger craving with something healthy. Not to say that the occasional treat is not acceptable, but if you know some good tricks...on the days that you need to keep the cravings at bay...there are some great tasting healthy options too!

I kind of live under a rock when it comes to such things, and I have never seen this before... but it made me laugh hysterically. That "monster" is just too funny for words.

I totally agree with you and had never really paid much attention to those commercials. I always heed my hunger. Actually, I try not to let myself ever get to the hungry monster stage. That's just setting yourself up for a binge. I eat my 3 main meals but always have snacks in between.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I haven't even heard that WW campaign but seriously, that is awful. We definitely should honor our hunger...why would we fight it? so silly indeed...

Love the glasses on you lady...you are so cute!

Oh and I have yet to try that clif bar but I it looks fab...as does the green cuisine goodies!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Very good point! I try to listen to my hunger cues but I also try to drink a lot of water in case my body is saying hunger but it's really that I'm thirsty... I think for a lot of people its just learning what true hunger feels like, and not eating because your bored, thirsty, tired, angry, etc.

Anonymous said... [reply]

You are too cute. You should model for American Apparel, but then again...you may have to pose with just a tube sock on.

I'm totally guilty of ignoring my hunger monster. I tend to deprive myself of carbs and it totally backfires; I get a little too happy when I get near bread!

Krista said... [reply]

I'm getting better at recognizing when I'm actually hungry vs bored.

You enjoyed some great eats, hun!

Missy said... [reply]

I love this post! Hee-larious commentary on the monster and a fantabulous message. Thanks!
PS Cute Glasses!

No deprivation for my Hunger Monster. Love it and it will love me back!! Is it weird I think the monster is really cute and I want one?

Chelsea said... [reply]

I agree that is a really dumb message that commercial is sending out! If our body is telling us it's hungry, it's because it needs food!

I spent way too long denying myself food and I never want to feel that way again. Now I eat whenever I'm hungry (and sometimes even when I'm not hehe) and I feel 100% happier! :)

PS. You're totally rocking those glasses girl!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I defintely respect my hunger. I hate to go for long periods of time without eating, and generally if I have a craving, I honor it.

Love how you layer your delicious Green Cuisine meals.

Anonymous said... [reply]

haha I LOVE that commercial. I always talk about how cute that little thing is and how I just want to hug it :)

Yummy-looking breakfast!

I bet that Clif bar is good. It's been so long since I've had one that I don't even remember what they taste like. Which is the best flavor?

Your glasses are so cute! <3 em. :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Yay! I'm glad you like that flavor!! I definitely ate a lot of those this weekend.
