Grossly Good Greens

"Eat Your Greens!"

That phrase was likely the Bane of Our Existence as children...

Luckily, we usually grow up to LOVE our
green food no matter how gross it may look

Beautiful Michal posted about "Groovy Green Oats"
which looked so delicious. It's a fast and tasty way to get
a few servings of greens in without effort!

Groovy Green Oats
adapted from Lil Earth Muffin

1/2 cup oats
1 cup water
1/4 cup soymilk
1 packet green food powder
1 tbsp ground flaxseeds
1 sliced banana
Dash of stevia

Combine the oats, soymilk, and water in a pot, and cook to desired
softness. Add the green food powder and stevia until thoroughly
mixed. Top with sliced banana and ground flaxseeds, and enjoy!

Mine turned out more mushy, yet tasted creamy and sweet

The recipe calls for wheatgrass and spirulina, so I opted
to use a Green Vibrance pack of a bunch of powdered
 greens, superfoods, enzymes and probiotics

Question: Did you like
your favorites and are they still?

I was actually one of those kids who loved veggies. My fav was probably carrots - which I still love!

I hated vegetables and I still do.
In fact when I was in preschool they wouldn't let me go out to play until I ate all my vegetables. So I would stuff them into my milk carton or scoop them onto the floor. :( I don't know why I don't like them. Wish I did, but I don't!

Liked them all except brussels sprouts, but like them now!

I was a fairly particular vegetable eater. My favorites were green beans, green peas, broccoli, and carrots. As an adult I love most vegetables, and love coming up with new recipes for them.

All I saw as a kid was the tail-end of my broccoli swirling down that toilet during sneak-outs at supper time.

Seriously, I hated vegetables as a child. Surprise surprise. :-)

Green Vibrance??? You're hardcore. I can't handle GV. We got free samples at work of that stuff and let's just say...broccoli's not the only thing that goes down my toilet.

:-D LOVE,

I was just talking to my mom today about why kids don't like veggies, and she said I always like them as kid, and what I couldn't stand were sausages and ketchup! hehe

Anonymous said... [reply]

I only liked broccoli if it was covered in cheese sauce. I used to LOVE baked potatoes and carrots as well!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I loved broc because my mom called them 'mini trees' with Cheese Whiz. Still one of my favourites, but much preferred without the liquid cheese ;)

My parents are health food nuts, so we ate a lot of veggies and I loved them all. Corn and broccoli were two of my favorites and I still could eat them at every meal!

I used to HATE brussle sprouts, but now I actually crave them..

I loved veggies as a kids ;) I was never really picky... I ate everything!

My favourites were broccoli and squash, which still are. I never tried a sweet potato though until last year, which is definitely one of my favourites!

Oh yes, I ate all my veggies as a kid. I even liked Brussels sprouts! Hope you had a great weekend!

I did like vegetables as a kid, but the green ones definitely weren't my favorites. I didn't love spinach or Brussels sprouts the way I do now! :)

I don't think I really liked any kind of vegetables as a kid except for peas picked fresh from my grandma's garden. Now? Now I devour almost every veggie I see. :)

I looooved vegetables as a kid. Steamed broccoli was my favorite-- and it still is! I always hated corn, though (which isn't really a veg anyway, is it).

Putting hemp protein powder in oats "greens" it up, too. ;)

Ooo I was definitely not a vegetable lover as a kid. Hated them. In fact, the only ones I would eat were carrots (raw), corn on the cob, and potatoes. I don't think I ever ventured to try anything green...

Now, I'm the complete opposite. I can't seem to get enough veggies, and I get cranky and feel deprived if I don't have my huge salads and mass veggie meals every day. Go figure. My favorites have definitely changed as well. I still love corn and carrots, but broccoli has been added to that list, and so has... lol basically every other veggie.

I think I ate fries as a kid. I HATED veggies.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I was never into eating veggies as a kid but now I LOVE them, luckily. :)

I HATED veggies as a kid. I did really love bean sprouts but I can't stand them anymore. As an adult, I definitely enjoy fruits and veggies much more than when I was younger. :)

I loved veggies and fruits as a kid, it wasn't until my teen years (maybe preteen) that I started to really like junk food. I remember loving toast and tomato sandwiches, and celery sticks!

The green oats looks a bit strange at first glance... but when I read that it's suppose to be green, it looked much more appetizing.

FINALLY CAUGHT UP! just need to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! and will be trying to cottage cheese pancakes you had up a couple days ago, they look yum yum!

and allthings green... yum... i love veggies, raw cooked smashed steamed fried...anyway... i cannot believe i gave them up for an entire year!!!

as a kid, veggies were pease, green beans, carrots... thats about it. i hate all those hahah. it wasnt until i got out on my own and grocery shopped i discovered VEGGIES!!

favorite is squash of any kind, and rutabagas!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Haha, I suppose I was the funny kid who always loved veggies! My parents must have done a good job of introducing them to my diet. ;) Green beans, peas, carrots, corn, fired okra (does that even count, haha?)... the only thing I didn't like was tomatoes, but I like those now! Nowadays I also eat lots of sweet potatoes and spinach and other leafy greens as well.

Michal said... [reply]

Thanks for the shout out girl, and your variation look delicious! :) Honestly as a kid I like hated veggies and would only eat fruits smothered in peanut butter. Now i cant imagine a life without tons of leafy greens and sweet juicy fruits. Can you tell im hungry now hehe??

Laury@TheFitnessDish said... [reply]

The greener the good the better!!! I just posted my green ice cream from yesterday actually, haha...and my oats are ALWAYS green ;-)

I liked vegges as a kid...it was funny, I HATED< like vomit in my mouth from the smell HATED Au Gratin potatoes....YUCK...and they were not even healthy, yet my parents made them all the time...I refused to eat them! You would think most "normal" kids would welcome tons of cheese dumped on their potatoes...not me!!!!!!

Thanks so much for the birthday wishes by the way :D

xoxo

Paint balls don't hurt as much as they look. It happens so fast, and adrenaline is pumping at an alarming rate. It's good motivation not to get hit again.

That oat cup actually looks so tasty. Almost like a breakfast fruit crumble :) I loved certain veggies like broccoli & corn growing up, but I hated peas and peppers. Now there isn't really any I don't like- other than mushrooms...

I loved vegetables!!! My favorites now are of the green variety! I am loving hemp protein powder lately and I swear it is because of the earthy flavor!

I was a total veggie lover as a kid. I don't know why I remember this so vividly, but when my mom would make steak she would top it with sauteed onions and mushrooms, and during dinner I'd always ignore the steak and just scrape off the onion/mushroom combo. I know, I'm so weird.

And now when it comes to getting greens, well, let's just say I'm not exactly deficient in veggies. :)

I loved all my veggies! I have kids as easy as I was :-)

As a kid I liked food. Period. I wasn't picky but picky was the cool kid thing to be so I pretended I hated broccoli. But I did genuinely dislike Brussels sprouts and mushy spinach. I'll eat anything that utilizes photosynthesis now, really...haha. Still not picky!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I've made some oats very similar to this before! I loved it and could barely taste the green stuff- not that I really care. I love my greens.
When I was little, I did like vegetables, but I was really picky and obsessive. At one point I would only eat food of a specific colour depending on the day (like one day orange, one day green, one day red kind of thing...) Eventually I grew out of that, but was still picky..I only liked certain veggies and I would only eat them raw. I hated anything mushy. I would eat broccoli and cauliflower and lettuce...those were my favourites. Then I swung the other way and really loved cooked vegetables...the mushier the better. If you don't already think I'm nutcase, I'll stop myself from going on and on about my weird eating habits. Anyway, at this point I don't have many quirks. I eat mostly raw veggies, but I cook my crucifers sometimes because they can be really hard on the stomach.
Happy Monday love! xoxox

I liked basically all vegetables. Vegetable love was not optional in my mother's house, haha.

My favorites then were green beans and broccoli, now they've been replaced by okra and kale!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I loved them as a kid! My favorites were beets, kohlrabi, broccoli, brussels sprouts...you name it. I'm sure it was because my parents taught me to garden at a young age, and I was excited to eat what I had grown.

I still love all different kinds of veggies, but I just can't get too excited by eggplant. I guess it's ok to not like one, right?

I went through phases as a kid. When I was super little I ate everything and particularly adored sweet potatoes (it was my dad's nickname for me :D). Then I hit the "I don't want it!" phase and only wanted spaghetti with butter and cheese but fortunately had responsible parents who said "Too bad, it's good for you, eat it anyway" and I now am back to loving and appreciating all vegetables :D

I have a tshirt that says Eat Your Greens! I hav always loved veggies except mushrooms and eggplant!

omg i just did a massive post 2 days ago about eating veggies and what kids will eat, parents responsibilities, etc. It was on Saturday. I got tons of great comments on it...anyway we are a plant based house around here and couldnt/wouldnt have it any other way :) there's very few veggies we wont eat...and skylar has a better palate for all veggies than even her father...teach 'em young, that's all i can say!

Your oatmeal actually looks great! I want some!! As a kid I loved corn on the cob, but now I feel like that's a "fake" veggie or something haha although I still love it. I also like roasted brussels with salt and butter! I have always like them which is funny because my mom hates them!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I did not like veggies as a kid, but definitely love them now! I really hope that my future kids are more open-minded than I was when I was little.

I love vegetables...always have! I was the kid who would rather fill up on carrots and celery than have dessert!

This is my kind of breakfast!!! I love green anything!

Hmmm as a kid I loved cauliflower....lol the least nutritious! I used to hate brussels, now I LOVE THEM!

xxoo

I actually hated eating as a kid. Other than junk food, I hated all food. All I wanted to do was play all day. Eventually I grew to love food and love vegetables as in not much of a meat eater.

Krista said... [reply]

I did like veggies as a kid. But when it came to broc I only liked the stem. I think Mom over cooked the florets and the tops got mushy. HA!

I like to add amazing grass to my oats and pancakes for a nice green hue...

I love roasted eggplant, roasted brussel sprouts, green monsters, and cheesy tomato broccoli! Also, I'm on a total sun-dried tomato kick ATM?

I'd love to try powdered green food :P
