Oats in a Jar

The Angry Hulk Beast went back into hiding,
allowing Kelsey bubble back to the surface.

The comment left by Averie explains precisely the emotional reactions
that I had from the Sprouted Wheat Tortillas. Our stomachs and brains
are interlinked and for me, I definitely experience more
symptoms relating mood and emotions versus physical.

I immediately threw the wraps away, they were of no service to anyone!

I had my first "oats in a jar" for breakfast!!!

Organic Peanut Butter from Nuts to You

... one of the blackberries jumped ship jar!

oats, bananas, blackberries, cinnamon and stevia

Listen, I'm not going to lie or deny the fact that I play with fire.
Maybe it's because i'm an Aries, or because I have my grandma's stubbornness

I needed wanted to test the wheat again.
This is the experimental curiosity coming out of me...

Egg salad sandwich on multi-grain bread from the Red Brick Cafe in Sidney

No reaction. No mood swing. No issue.

I take full responsibility for choosing to test
wheat in my diet and I defend my decision to do so.
The journey it's taken me on has been one that has led me back
to being gleeful and childlike versus rigid and victimized.

I'm not saying I will always eat wheat daily,
but I want all foods to be a part of me because my intuition draws me towards that. Why should I avoid a food that brings me joy and relieves a lot of my depression? Since my experiment i've had more energy, better focus and can actually blog and comment daily without feeling like a tonne of bricks were hanging from my body!

Yes, my mom and I go on dates. We enjoy rendezvous with coffees and teas.
I'm the coffee lover, she's the tea connoisseur.

A lot of you talk about how much you sweat,
but i'm sure I beat you all in the overactive sweat gland department...

I went for a 15km run this morning and although it was fairly cool,
I still worked up a sweat...

You know you're legit, when you work up an ass sweat!!!
...and to think, i'm still single...

I'm stuck between gross and fascinating...

I'm not sure how my body will feel in the future with wheat, but I have a good intuition about when to push and when to back off. Plus, I want to learn + explore my body and I think we all deserve the opportunity to do so.

And hey, I love controversial studies!!!

Question: Are there any foods you've been avoiding but want to try testing again to see how your body reacts?

oh kelsey, i'm sorry about your horrible experience with the sprouted wheat tortilla yesterday :( but what a brave girl you are to give it another try! i'm glad you're symptom free this time!

whew 15k run! just the sound of it makes me tired. you can tell i'm not much of a runner..haha.

Congrats on one awesome run!!!

Also glad you're symptom free this time and feel that wheat is bringing you more energy. Sounds worth another try to me, too ;)
I try to avoid/limit processed soy products. There's just too much debate as to whether it messes up hormones and such, and it seems like the stories from people with bad experiences are all complete horror stories!

I've been avoiding wheat and peanut butter because I'm almost positive that I'm reacting to one of them and as it turns out.. I'm pretty sure I am. I cut wheat out for about 2 weeks if not longer and then I had it last night. When I woke up this morning I was sooo bloated and uncomfortable but I decided to have some more wheat(bread)just to see.. BAD move. I've been even MORE bloated and uncomfortable. I'm working 10 hours today and have 4 to go.. I honestly want to cry. It's going to be a LONG time before I'm brave enough to experiment with wheat again.

I'm glad to hear that you threw away the raging wraps :P ... and even more glad to hear that your belly is still happy with unsprouted wheat. That sandwicg looks LOADED with goodies!! Mmmm.

<3 Tat

PS. My mom and I go on coffee dates too. It's all the rage :)

i have tested dairy again
I cant and will not do milk.. i get PHYSICALLY sore and "ew" sick when I drink it

cottage cheese and yogurt seem to be fine though.

Don't forget about hormones! They are fun too! That could have been part of the issue yesterday!

I have done what you are doing with soy and dairy. Not pretty!

In the beginning of the summer I was testing out different foods to see what made me sick. It was so beneficial to me to finally find out what causes my random stomach pains. Since that was so recently, I am perfectly fine with leaving them out of my body and giving my digestive system a vacation from being sick.

I was so psyched to have OIAJ the other morning, as I knew I only had a scrape of peanut butter left in the jar.. but I woke up to find my mum had thrown the jar away >.<
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That cookie looks and sounds delicious!
I do exactly the same thing as you with testing out foods I might have a reaction to.. I push the boundaries a little TOO far sometimes and I'm always trying to conquer food phobias I might have.
I'm so glad I do though!

Sometimes I think that some of our "intolerances" and all that jazz are all in our heads, and that the stress we get when thinking/debating about them is worse for us than actually eating them. I know that I used to be so scared that I was sensitive to wheat/dairy/soy/X/X/X because of numerous stomach troubles I had, but when I finally eased up with the restriction, I not only became happier, but my stomach problems went away as well. I'm not saying that's the case for everyone, but I DO think that we tend to make a bigger deal out of eating certain things than it's worth. I'm glad that you won't be restricting yourself, and I'm super happy that you've been feeling happier and more energetic as well :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Totally my kind of OIAJ! ;)

I am lucky enough not to have any intolerances... I'm sure there are some things that might make me feel better if I eliminated them, but I don't feel like it's worth the headache right now. :p I'm glad that you're having fun with it and easing up on yourself, though!

I think this is a really good experiment for you! Why avoid wheat for the rest of your life when you don't have to, ya know?

Anonymous said... [reply]

LOL on the many sweat pics!

Also I love your oats in a jar - and esp the berry that jumped ship!

I also love that you and your mom have dates - wonderful!

i gave up caffeine about 2 years ago and i love that i can function well without it but i kinda miss the taste of a good cup of joe. that, and the buzz!

I didn't want to believe I couldn't handle nuts and I insisted on trying again. But after a stomach ache and a breakout on my face I know that I cannot handle nuts. I must stop trying!

I'm glad that you can eat wheat again Kelsey!

Jolene - EverydayFoodie said... [reply]

My body has never really reacted to any foods - I eat everything!

I definitely have experienced the link between my stomach and my mood...When my stomach is bad, I'm in an awful mood (which could be correlation and not causation, but you know, just sayin) and when my mood is low it definitely has an effect on my tummy and digestion. The more stressed and depressed I am, the more irritated my poor digestive system gets. So I totally understand where you're coming from, and I'm glad you tossed the sprouted wheat!
And I agree, you should continue with the wheat experiment if eating it gives you pleasure and you feel happier. Why deprive yourself of doing something that makes you happy if there is no real reason to? You seem to be doing well enough with non-sprouted wheat, so why ban it from your diet? Just my two cents!
I get pretty sweaty when I run too...especially in this crazy heat. In Toronto right now, you can get sweaty just by sitting around. I think it's fairly normal!

I cut out nuts but once in a while try them to see if I get any reactions. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But most of the time I do :(

Glad the wheat thing is going so well for you (other than hulk) Kelsey. Kudos for being so persistent and brave.

I've never personally had a reaction in that way, but both my brother and I are lactose intolerant. He thought his was getting better (and it is) but one day he ate a bar of chocolate (I think it was galaxy) and felt no ill effects, until bedtime; when, at 3am he burst into my room, shouting that there was a bomb under my bed. He couldn't remember any of it.
Naturally, being inquisitive, I made him eat the same brand of chocolate bar, at the same time, I realised it must be this because he had not eaten or done anything else that was new. Low and behold, that night he locked himself in the bathroom running from 'wolves'.
Being a lovely sister, I just called him a lunatic and stopped him from eating galaxy chocolate. But now I realise it is a lot more normal, but having your macho big brother go mad at night is still pretty funny.
I'm glad you are choosing foods that make you feel better, food is, at the end of the day, a form of medicine.
I know how you feel with the sweating issue, I do probably the sweatiest martial art ever. I discovered a fantastic extra strength deodorant, so I drip sweat from every part of my body, but my armpits are bone dry. Marvellous. I suggest you invest.

Kelsey do what suits you the best. If you want to explore your limits and what gluten does to you, do it. Believe me even if you have celiac, nothing is gonna happen in 5 weeks.

No you are not playing with fire, you are just testing yourself for a short period of time. Above all, the most important thing is to find what is the best for your body. And the this test is one way to do it.

its good to hear you are doing ok adding wheat back into your diet....hang in there! thanks for a glimpse into your workout clothes...I'm with you on the sweat cycle, I sweat in a snow storm, it makes my wife crazy!!

glad to hear you're feeling better! congrats on your run! i'm SO jealous. my quad has been injured for a while now..i haven't finished 10kms in 6 weeks! oh how i miss that runner's high...

as for my diet, i definitely do not eat anything fried. fried foods and my stomach do not get along. which sucks because if you go to any restaurant, most of the food is prepared that way. my doctor isn't worried about me though (probably glad i don't eat that stuff.) oh well, could be worse. i could be allergic to chocolate :P

I'm just catching up on your posts! Sorry to hear about your sprouted wheat reaction! That's annoying. I'm absolutely with you, I think it's important to find what works for each of us as individuals.

A few years ago I kept on re-testing wheat but my reactions were immediate or within 24-48 hours. I keep testing corn and PB as I love PB, and corn thins are easily accessible. I know that they disagree with me but not quite enough to completely eliminate them at this point in time. Anyway, glad you're feeling better and that wheat is still generally working for you :) xxx

I love your workout outfit!! It is so super cute. And your food looks awesome - I'm really impressed with the way your trying out the effect of foods on your tummy. Such a brave little girl :)

So am I officially the last person on the planet to try oats in a jar??? I'm thinking so. Girl, I sweat like a freaking man. No lie. I promise I have you beat (that is if we were in a sweating contest LOL).

I think it's great that you're trying out wheat in your diet again. Especially if it's giving you more energy and happiness! Why deprive yourself of a food if you don't have to? :)

I've been highly allergic to nuts (except almonds) all my life, but some tests I got last summer suggested I might be okay eating certain other nuts. I'd like to test it out, but it would require extensive bloodwork and monitoring overnight in a hospital. It seems like a big pain!!

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self said... [reply]

I'm really inspired by your commitment to trusting your intuition and doing what's best for YOU! :)

meg @ The Gluten-Free Ginger said... [reply]

I definitely understand your need to experiment, I did the same thing. Are you still planning on doing the celiac test? I hope so!
Your "rage" reaction is definitely something I've experienced with food allergies. Sometimes a dramatic mood swing is my first clue that I've eaten gluten. But if you're feeling good, energy-wise, that's probably a good sign! Yay for being able to eat wheat!

Glad to see you back to your gleeful self -- however I do have a hunch that you are cute even when you are a beast. :-D

"You know you're legit, when you work up an ass sweat!!!

lmao you're my kind of girl!!

i cut out all grains and dairy for a while - and upon reincorporating gluten and corn i discovered a corn allergy rather than gluten as i'd originally suspected. i'd like to try corn again but i'm kind of scared. every now and then i'll eat dairy and i can handle a little bit of it occasionally now that i dont eat it all the time.

Anonymous said... [reply]

wheat/gluten! i want that so badly but im terrified of what will happen :/
one day :)
p.s. 15km? omg. you are superhuman.
p.p.s. i am so happy that your body is reacting positively to the gluten. yay! :)

that is SO Sweet that you and your mama go on dates! same here!!
OIAJ! you know i luh dat girl :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I was just on the phone with my friend telling how ridiculously gross I am because I am literally covered in sweat from the gym!

And I tried OIAJ for the first time yesterday...dont hate me, but I could not even eat it! Ive never really liked oats, but thought before i knocked them for good, that I should try the ever famous OIAJ- no love from me!

alex said... [reply]

oh gosh...you wore a sweater to work out in?! If only Houston could have your weather!

the berry jumped ship! I love it!

Jackie (Peaces of Earth) said... [reply]

Oh yeah ass sweat. Now that's hardcore. :)

I'm sorry to hear about your reaction, but it looks like you have a good experimental attitude. I think experimenting is important in figuring out what is right for us. I'm sure you'll come to a happy place with wheat and gluten when this is over.

I've cut out dairy/eggs since I'm a vegan, but before I only ate the crappy factory farmed dairy. I do sometimes wonder how my body would react to farm fresh, grass fed dairy and eggs.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I'm so glad that you're feeling great and have more energy and are just more happy in general!!!!! Thats awesome that you have been okay with wheat (except the sprouted wheat)! Food not only fuels us, it comforts us and makes us happy and just tastes good. So it makes me so happy that you've been really able to eat what you intuitively want! I hope it all keeps going great for you because food is such a big part of our lives and to be able to enjoy bits of everything is so amazing!

p.s. I'm a sweater too, I have yet to create that much ass sweat though ;)

Your oats look marvellous!!!

My belly decided a few years ago to hate pears, but I love ripe pears! The tree in my parents yard is full of them and I'm debating whether or not to give one a go. Just to see what happens.

Hooray for Oats in a Jar! I'm glad you liked them.

Sorry about your sprouted wheat reaction.. that's so disappointing. I can't wait to hear what the final diagnosis is!
