Freezer Foraging

Sometimes it's fun to
rummage through the freezer.

Waaaay in the back there's always something stashed, and
today was no exception. I found some gluten-free bread slices
that were ages old, but still good! Hmmm better not waste :)

Bread and blueberry jam with a little vegan butter

Of course, I had my yummy Raw Summer Salad for lunch

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out we sell Pure Fit Bars
here!!! There was only the Peanut Butter and Berry Almond
flavors available. I went for the Peanut Butter Crunch no less.

This was so delicious! They're really powdery though, it starts out chewy
and then turns to a dry powdery consistency... But it tasted really good!!!
As long as you have water nearby so you don't choke lol

Of course, you know I like to stop at Green Cuisine on the weekends too!

Take- Out Box: Quinoa burger patty, Quinoa salad, greens,
broccoli, kale, kidney bean & chickpea chili, kabocha squash,
arame seaweed, ketchup, mustard, chili powder, and cayenne

Well, you didn't think I would bake a batch without
keeping a few treats at home for me, did you?

Love dipping them in some almond milk...

Okay so I mentioned briefly in the last post about
the Organic Islands Festival i'm going to tomorrow...

I'm taking my parents and we're gonna bike out there. The festival is quite popular and has the best local farmers who come out to sell their produce. There's always samples and free chocolate, as well as an organic vodka tasting lounge lol. There will be raw food chefs and many free goodies and activities. I heard there will be wheat-free hot dogs and local organic chicken sausages!!! They had me at hot dog....

Before I go I must be a good blogger and follow the instructions for receiving The Fabulous Sugar Doll Award from Chelsea!

First, I'm going to pass this on to 3 other girlies. It's really hard to choose since I'm not sure what I should qualify it on... maybe the 3 people that come to mind when I think of a Sugar Doll:

1. Laury @ The Fitness Dish
2. Lauren @ She's a Runner
3. Katie @ Healthy Diva Eats

Now I have to share 10 little known facts about me:

1. Deathly afraid of mosquitoes!!!
2. I was fruitarian for 3 months, hardcore
3. I've had 8 teeth pulled and 9 cavities
4. People used to confuse me with the actress from the movie "My Girl"
5. Won many cheerleading competitions back in high school
6. I broke my arm when I was little because I refused to go hiking without
my dress shoes, inevitably tripping over a tree root... lesson learned!
7. I've been single for 6 years *GASP*
8. Never had a pet... now I babysit fish lol
9. Wasn't allowed to pierce my ears until I was 16
10. I refuse to have tan lines.. I have a fear of white patches lol

So I guess how this works is if you recieved an award you can pass it on to 3 more people + list your 10 questions.

Question: I've been so hungry lately!
Most people say your appetite diminishes
in the summer heat but mine is in overdrive.
Do you feel more or less hungry
in the Summer?

My appetite has definitely taken a nose dive which is very unusual. I pretty much blame it on the heat and just try to be aware of it and make sure I remember to fuel and refuel for workouts. Hope you have a great time at the festival!

Crystal said... [reply]

Now I want some toast.

I feel like my appetite doesn't really change with different seasons. The only thing that changes is that I prefer iced coffee to hot coffee when it is hot out. :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I love surprises in the fridge/freezer!

Hmm..my appetite really varies. In the winter I get hungry for warm soups, desserts, breads. In the summer I crave ice cream, smoothies, frozen yogurt. I really don't know. My appetite varies, depending on what time of the month it is ;-)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I hate tan lines. And I'm rocking some serious ones at the moment... fail!

And my appetite is pretty steady throughout the seasons- I just crave different foods to fill it!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Wow-- you'd never find a slice of GF bread in my freezer (it would be LONG GONE). Well, I take that back, I guess we have some raisin pecan bread slices in there, but they belong to me-- hence why they haven't all been gobbled up!

Your PB bliss bars look so yummy!

I tan so easily (hardly EVER get a sun burn), so tan lines are pretty much unavoidable for me.
Have fun at the festival!

i found some veggie burgers in my freezer the other day- BEST SURPRISE EVER :) :) :)
love it!! that PB bar looks soo yummay too!!! goodness! thats hilarious you hate tan lines! a lot of ppl do!

hi beautiful
i was reading your blog and saw your comment to me come in while i was reading your posts!! crazy esp stuff!

anyway you can order thru iherb online for probiotics and if you can find kefir or kombucha, or even apple cider vinegar that's raw/not filtered or pasteurized...all that will help re balance your gut. i totally hear you on antibiotics throwing things off and also some ppl are just prone to chronic candida. ugh. sorry sweets!

that bar in this post...dense, chewy, that's my kinda bar!

tan lines..do you tan in the nude? that would be my style :) i dont like tan lines either LOL but unfort i get em b/c i cant go nude in this area...

Anonymous said... [reply]

Tomorrow I expect you to be a picture taking maniac so that I can pretend I'm right there at the festival too.

I hate tan lines too! Which is why I try to avoid the sun as much as possible and never "tan" in a bathing suit. If I'm going to tan then I want to do it nude! I haven't tanned at all this year but a friend and I plan to go nude tanning sometime soon. Nice tan and no lines!

You've been single for 6 years? That's not so bad.. I've never been UN single. Haha. Relationships scare me so I try to avoid them.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hi girlie :)
It's wonderful that you're feeling your appetite coming on strong! Your body must be working its wonders and digesting properly :) Good feeling I'm sure.
You DO look like that girl from My Girl! She was so adorable! Haha, I loved that movie although it was a tearjerker :P

Anonymous said... [reply]

That salad looks sooooo good! So summering and crisp and fresh! I love crunchy lettuce!!
I hate that movie My Girl..... I am soooo terrified of bees now! Its so sad!
How do you not get tan lines? Don't tan or tan naked??
I'm not really sure what my appetite does..... I tend to avoid treatment while I am in school until the summer.... at which point I need to gain in order to be able to go back to school..... so I tend to be forced to eat more than I want, and therefore and definitely full all the time....
Except this year.... i was ceritfied at christmas and didn't go back..... but i still couldn't really tell you....
I think your body has to work harder to cool you down in the summer.... therefore burning for energy?? maybe....

Tatianna said... [reply]

Can I just say that I love toast with jam AND butter? Butter (een if it's vegan, I'm sure) underneath the jam makes a world of difference. Yum!

When it's super hot my apetite goes away... but when it's just regualar summer weather I get really hungry too. Everyone's different :)

The thing about you, I liked the most was going hiking with your dress shoes :). At least with you it was shoes, for me it was a painting from our living room. I m not kidding, I was carrying a fake Picasso painting, everywhere! hahaha.

My appetite is like yours, grows during summer. I think is because we burn more energy by swimming, hiking, walking etc

Jessie @ The Happiness in Health said... [reply]

8 teeth pulled!! Oh my goodness! And I thought my 4 teeth pulled were bad!! They were pulled to make room for braces (and my remaining teeth!). Did you have braces, too?

I tend to be less hungry when it's hot, but if there is fresh fruit around, watch out! ;)

I can't WAIT to hear about the Organic Islands Festival!

Joanne said... [reply]

Exploring my freezer is always an adventure. You just never know what you're gonna find!

I think it's SO COOL that you and your parents are biking over to that festival. I wish I could get my parents to be more active.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I love exploring the depths of my freezer...I always find something interesting there!

I'm equally hungry in the summer, but usually for much lighter foods - lots of water-filled fruits like cantaloupe and watermelon.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Those are some pretty interesting facts, Ms. Squirrely! I was a fruitarian for about 6 months and raw for 8 or so. You're right that it's a pretty hardcore lifestyle, and in the end I started missing so many of my favorite foods, so I gave it up. I still love my fruits, but these days I have them with yogurt, chocolate, oats, and all of that unraw goodness ;)

My hunger is... pretty consistent, actually. It only goes away when it's really, really hot outside. Otherwise, I'm usually always ravenous :)

Megan D said... [reply]

The Organic Islands thing sounds SO fun! And that's awesome you are biking there! Ahh can I come with you?! And I agree, I always find fun stuff in the depths of my freezer :)

Chelsea said... [reply]

Haha I love it when I discover old goodies in the freezer. Sometimes if I'm lucky I'll find an old container of fro yo hiding out in the back! ;)

My appetite has been outta control this summer too! I need to eat like every 2 hours!! My family jokes that they should just set up my bedroom in the kitchen, since that's where they always find me.

Have fun at the festival today. It sounds like it's going to be awesome!

Sarena Shasteen - The Non-Dairy Queen said... [reply]

I love the take out box you always get. It always looks like an incredible mixture! Have fun at the festival...you are always up to something fun!

Anonymous said... [reply]

everything looks delicious- i am so jealous of the green cuisine salads you get- they look awesome! & biking will be so fun w/ your fam- that's so cute! congrats on the award :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

How do you keep away the tan lines? I have so many!!

I love finding food in the back of my freezer! Sometimes I forget what's in there because there's so much frozen bread, nuts, fruits, veggies, meats and fish, meals I've made in the past and frozen, desserts, etc....trying to clean it out...sorta! Haha

The salad looks amazing! I think my appetite is way out of control in the summer too!

xoxoxo

Haha, loved the 10 little-known facts, you´re just too cute girl!! I ALWAYS feel more hungry in the summer time- I think it´s perfectly natural! In the heat my metabolism just runs and runs and I´m craving everything at one time - salty, sweet, carbs and protein -just give it to me :)

Wishing you lots of fun @ the festival
xoxo Mel

Anonymous said... [reply]

I like that you babysit fish. How cute.

My appetite varies all the time, all year. While sometimes I think it's smaller in the summer, I really think it ebbs and flows all the time.

Anonymous said... [reply]

That quinoa burger looks really yummy. I wonder where I could find one around here...

I wasn't allowed to pierce my ears until 13, and I thought that was bad. I wanted a second hole, but my mom said I had to be 18 for that, so I let my younger sister pierce my ears for me at home :) Probably not the best idea...

I don't think my appetite ever diminishes! I think it goes away when I'm out in the heat, but it makes up for it when I'm back in the A/C :)

Unknown said... [reply]

some of the best finds are in the freezer. Love it! Are those pure fit bars gluten free? I've see them a lot.
And what exactly is a fruitarian? Does those really exist, hehe? Not to offend anyone :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Your eats look so yummy. I wish I knew where to find some organic fairs like that here in New Jersey...did you have to search online for something like this or was it easy to find out about it?
And you cheered competition in high school? That's exciting I did too :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hi Kelsey!!! your boxes from green cuisine always have my mouth wtering hehe!! :P the organic islands festival sounds like fun! totally my kind of thing, specilly the vodka tasting hahahaha :P okay, hot dogs sounds good too :P I like the ten facts about you. Who's the actrees from the movie you say? i'll look it up on imdb.com :P
and how was the fruitarian thing? did you felt good??

Anonymous said... [reply]

You were a fruitarian? I would love to learn about how that was like. I've heard about it before, and it always made me curious. Would you like to share about it sometime? I would love to hear!

My appetite diminishes in the summer. All I want is fresh fruits and veggies-and smoothies!

Alycia @ Fit n Fresh said... [reply]

I am so jealous about the festival you're going to! Why don't I live in canada?!

Congrats on your award babe! I think it's the cutest! And in the summer, I've found that I eat just as much, just wayyyy more fruits and smoothies (:

Tori said... [reply]

Um I'd say I'm not more or less hungry in the summer or winter. I think during the summer though, it's normal for people to eat more than usual because they might be on a break from school or work. And you know if you're at home, you're snacking! Haha!

<3 Tori

Anonymous said... [reply]

That takeout box looks heavenly :) Good taste, girl!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I always have a huge appetite. Rain or shine. Although if I'm sitting in the sun, all I can think about is smoothies or salads. Both the Green Cuisine and your summer salad have my heart.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I am recently really hungry too! I must snack all day...ha. Sounds like a fun event planned for tomorrow! Can't wait to hear more...

I can't believe you only ate fruit for a few months...I'd die.

I did some frezzer foraging over the weekend too! Its amazing what little gems are hidden in there!

Sophia Lee said... [reply]

How did being a fruitarian work for you? 3 whole months...I can't imagine, as much as I love fruits.

My appetite may have dimiished a bit from this heat, but I'm still eating tons...guess there's something even more troubling about THAT...

Jess - Healthy Exposures said... [reply]

I get a kick out of freezer and cupboard-foraging, too. I tend to freeze things thinking "oh, this'll be a great quick meal one night!!" and then never get to it :P
The organic festival sounds like a ton of fun! although...vodka tasting? I've never found vodka to be particularly pleasant, call me crazy. Can't wait to see what you find, though :)
I tend to be hungrier when it's hot, too!! It seems like everyone always says they're not hungry because it's hot, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who is the opposite, lol.

We Are Not Martha said... [reply]

I love blueberry jam! And wow for being a fruitarian for 3 months! Impressive! I LOVE fruit, but also love too many other foods :)

I usually have less of an appetite in the summer, but mostly just when it's really, really hot. Otherwise, business as usual!

i do think our tummies would be great friends! your box of vegan delights sounds right up my alley!

i crave different things in the summer than i do in the winter but i don't think i am more or less hungry. i go for more raw fruits and veggies with lots of salads and sandwiches.

Krista said... [reply]

I'd say I'm not near as hungry in the summer, but I think it's because I'm outside more whereas in the winter I get bored, then eat.

Love the photo with the bar and empty glass!

Michal said... [reply]

MMM that is one tasty looking box of take out :) That quinoa burger patty looks so yummy and I love that you included some kale in there. I wish more people would give it a try. And peanut butter bliss bars? Why are those not in my life yet?

Velva said... [reply]

Cheers to finding all wonderful things hidden in your freezer! Awesome.

I eat more during the summer because I am less busy. I'm ready for school to start!

lynn said... [reply]

i'm afraid of mosquitos too. well, not afraid, but i HATE THEM.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I love how you can freeze bread and then it stays good for sooo long.
I have been super hungry in the summer but probably because I am working out so much!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Oh I love freezer finds!!! Yesterday I found some cookie dough that I had frozen...I definitely enjoyed some of that!!

I love your method of the avocado massaged into the salad, I'm totally trying that one. You're so clever for thinking that up!

Take care girly!!! Hope you had fun at the Organic Foods festival!!

Erica said... [reply]

Your raw summer salad looks DELISH!! Do you like olives?

Lastly a song for you: Hungry in the winter, hungry in the summer, hungry all the time... :P

Well, that describes me, anyway. :D

My hunger goes up and down all the time, and there is no rhyme or reason for it. I don't particularly notice being more or less hungry in the summer. I do sweat more, which means I'm burning more calories, so maybe then I eat more? Who knows.

You do look like the girl form My Girl! I hadn't thought about it before. Loved that movie. She's very beautiful.

Your summer salad looks perfect. AND, I love to go through my freezer too! Never let food go to waste if you can help it, right?!

Anonymous said... [reply]

love your summer salad! especially the avocado in it...mhhhh one of my favorite salad ingredients
I´m always hungry...in summer, in winter...always! your body shows you what it needs and so dont´t worry about it

Katie said... [reply]

I've been foraging, too... we don't have ANY groceries!

Congrats on the award :-)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I think I'm constantly hungry year round. :) My hubby barely eats in the summer but he also works outside.

Anonymous said... [reply]

appetite....macadamia nuts or cream cheese, kills it every time! but for a summer yummy, blueberries(frozen) with heavy cream(nom nom....)
i am SO SO SO SO jealous of where you live and all the cool stuff you have access to and get to do. like, whole foods store, farmers markets, cool expo things geez, i wish.

thanks for the comment on my last post too i really read into it and appreciate it!

ps- you REALLY DO look like the grown up version of the girl on My Girl! haha loved that flick as a kid!

It's too bad the Organic Islands Fest isn't going on in August or I'd so be there!!!

Speaking of which - I'm going to be in Nanaimo for a couple of weeks. I think we may be planning a blogger meet-up. Are you interested?

Anonymous said... [reply]

Aww thank you so much for passing the award on to me lovely girl! I wish I could send it right back to you, but you've already got it. You truly are a sugar doll!
First of all, I find that my appetite definitely diminishes in the summer. I have a pretty small appetite to begin with and in the summer I just never feel like eating. But I know that not everyone is like that, and its normal. Just listen to your body and eat when you're hungry!
Second, I am so jealous that you guys had cheerleading in high school? Our high schools in Toronto don't have them (or at least most of them don't...and the schools I went to definitely didn't). I remember being a little kid- I did gymnastics for a year and I did all types of dance until middle school and I was obsessed with the idea of being a cheerleader because it was an ideal combo of both. I thought it looked like fun! Anyway, my dream never came true. I got to high school and discovered that there was no team, and I had also given up dancing so that I could obsess over academics. Fun.
I think its awesome that you won competitions! You must have been awesome.
Thanks again for the award lovely. xoxox
