Squash: A Staple Food

There's certain foods that I consider a staple in my diet;
This selection is determined by a series of categorical factors

Let's use Kabocha Squash for example

Factor #1: Is this food cheap? Yes, a 3lb Kabocha Squash at Walmart is $2.00-$3.00

A seedy inside view

Factor #2: Is it easy to prepare? Yes, prep time is under 5 minutes
and only requires a knife for cutting and a spoon for scooping seeds

Factor #3: How versatile is it? Very versatile because squash can
either be steamed, boiled, baked, or fried and always tastes delicious

Factor #4: Does it mesh well with other foods?
Yes, especially with proteins and green vegetables

Here I cut the Kabocha Squash in half and baked in the oven for 60
minutes at 385F before pairing it with Stir-Fried Vegetables and Shredded
Roast Chicken Breast, and topping with Yellow and Spicy Brown Mustards

Factor #5: Could you eat this everyday? Absolutely!

And thankfully Fall/Autumn is "Squash-Season" so
I can rest assured that there'll be plenty of it in stock

Question: What is your staple food this season?

hey beautiful :) I so agree, squash is a must all year round! I love that you can either eat it savory or sweet or even both, as I like my squash best with cayenne, cumin, cinnamon and a little stevia.

just wanted to stop by and say thank you for leaving a comment on my blog a few weeks ago. this means so much to me and I wanted to let you know, I just published a new post ;)

Never tried Kabocha squash but definitely want to now! Love butternut squash and zucchini, though.
P.S. Have the exact same dish as you!

That is the prettiest squash dish! I am not normally a huge squash fan... but I may try yours. I love sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

My staple is probably apples. I've loved them since I was a kid, and they are such a fall food. Plus they taste awesome dipped in peanut butter.

PS - I nabbed a kabocha, approx. 3lb, for $0.97 at T&T Supermarket last week. Woot!

My staple food has GOT to be butternut squash! BUt, I have been meaning to try kabucha squash for about two years now, and I have no excuses not to finally buy some. This squash creation you have presented here looks amazing! I love the design you made with the cheese.

squash is definitely my staple food of the season ( i even eat kabocha year round, i know, i know, not so seasonal friendly but i love it) i ate so much winter squash last year i started to have a slight orange glow- not too noticeable but definitely there. Your squash dish pictured looks so amazing! i really want to try making it sometime :)

I've still never had kabocha squash. Butternut squash has stolen my heart.. but I need to try some kabocha! Though not seasonal, bananas are always my staple food. ;)
