Doubt the Sprout

I've heard so many great things about sprouted grains.
Many gluten sensitive people can tolerate sprouted wheat and grains because of the enzymes that remain intact during the process.

So naturally I was excited to test out some Sprouted Wheat Tortillas.

Sprouted Wheat Tortillas from Alvarado St. Bakery

I stuck to tradition with my usual egg, kale, onion and mustard wrap combo.

It's funny how the brown rice tortillas actually hold their shape better!

Very tasty, so far so good!
... but the story doesnt end here ...

20 minutes after eating I started feeling off...

Pretty soon I was in a full blown RAGE!
Throwing things, slamming doors, yelling,
swearing, screaming and acting like a rediculous fool.

This isn't me! I don't act like this!

Immediately I went to my bedroom beat up my pillow and calmed myself down. What was going on? What was causing this extreme rage? The answer could only be SPROUTED WHEAT!!!

I can eat refined wheat flour, white flour and whole grain flour without having any reaction, so why was my body freaking out over Sprouted Wheat?

Mom to the Rescue...

My mom knows a lot about allergies. She was quite shocked over what happened to me this morning but suggested that the reasons made a lot of sense. Wheat is an insoluble fiber, rendering it indigestible by the human body. It isn't meant to be broken down, it can't be broken down, and is used as a bulking agent in the colon to push away toxic debris. So by eating sprouted wheat, the enzymes actually break the gluten down so the body can digest it, thus causing a reaction. Make sense?

I'm really confused since I was always told its better to sprouted wheat if you
normally have a reaction to processed wheat. But I have the opposite effect!!!

Any help? Any ideas?

Hmmm I cant offer any answers unfortunately - but how very strange indeed!

Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter said... [reply]

That is really strange. I don't know anything about gluten or wheat allergens to I can't really tell you. Sorry hun!

That's so odd! Have you looked up stuff online/talked to docs about it? It's so interesting to me how certain foods affect your mental state ya know?

Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) said... [reply]

Wow, that's a strange reaction for sure! Are you sure that it's the sprouted wheat and not any other component, like egg or greens? Or, something you ate earlier. As you probably know, when you eat something, the food that's already in your gut gets pushed down and could be hitting a sensitive area in your small intestine. So curious.

I like your psycho muffin, though. LOL Gold!

OMG, I just noticed you have the name/URL option!! AWESOMENESS <3

I've never heard of that kind of reaction with food before, only with pharmaceuticals. Do you think you'll see your doctor about it? And how long did the rage last? What a curious reaction.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Oh wow! I never heard of that. I wish I could give you some advice! But I think what your mom said makes sense. Hmm.. I wonder if you could try spreading ghee on something that's sprouted? Supposedly, it helps awaken the digestive fires. Ah gosh I don't want to give you bad advice lol. I don't know :\

XOXO I hope you feel better!

Right....Sprouted Wheat

Matt here again, I dunno, this might all be a load of crap, I once ate all of the cup cakes my dad made and all i had was a huge raging toilet session after! Keep me posted. Your #1 fan MATT!

I'm so sorry the sprouted grains didn't agree with you. The way your mom explains it actually makes a lot of sense, so my advice would be to stay away from the sprouts. I also have heard that sprouted grains are sometimes easier for gluten or wheat sensitive people to handle. I'm not really sure why. Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's all about finding out what works for YOU right? And obviously you function better on non-sprouted wheat so if you just listen to your body, you should be okay!
At least your kale mixture looks as beautiful as always. You know I love pretty food.

Oh no, sounds like sprouted wheat is a Kelsey nono.
Your mom sounds like one smart woman! I wish I could help! But i'm clueless!

Angela (the diet book junkie) said... [reply]

oh no!! so sorry to hear this, i wish i had some words of wisdom too. just throw that junk out and maybe talk to a doctor. hope you feel better soon!

Amanda @ . seek . said... [reply]

Oh wow, hun, that sounds like a horrible reaction :( And it's odd, because like you said, I always thought that sprouted wheat was easier on the system than regular wheat. I know that my stomach doesn't take well to regular bread, but I can eat sprouted toasts without a problem.

I really wish that I could offer you some advice, but I have no idea when it comes to this kind of thing. I can sympathize though... trying to figure out what your body reacts well to, and what makes you feel bad can be such a painstakingly annoying process. I have the occasional stomach problems, and I've tried cutting out/reintroducing things countless times, and I STILL can't figure it out. Sometimes I just want to give up...

Jolene - EverydayFoodie said... [reply]

That sounds like an awful reaction - wow! I have never heard of anything like that, but it makes sense.

In regard to your comment on my blog ... my favourite oat parfait is probably the one in this post:

I don't know that I can offer any help but I have to say I'm really sorry your diet is causing so many problems. I know it sucks when your body doesn't react well to food. My body, for instance, doesn't react well to sugar. None of it at all. Not fruits not carrots. It doesn't process it well.

Lola said... [reply]

Rage?? how weird! did you feel anything else? your stomach hurt? you had rashes or something? I don't have a clue... but stic to rice tortillas or corn!

lequan@luvtoeat said... [reply]

That is the strangest reaction I've heard of. I wish I could be of better help or any help for that matter but I'm sorry, I have nothing to attribute as I know nothing of the matter. I just really hope Ms. Hulk never gets loose again. Sorry, you had to go through such a reaction.

Jaclyn said... [reply]

What a yum looking wrap, lovin the big tortillas and the kale!

Yikes, food allergies--all allergies, are no fun! Good luck with that!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Maybe it is also that this tortilla is very processed. I mean sprouted wheat looks nothing like that.
For me this is a very important thing, I mean to eat foods at their natural form.

Oh Kelsey I hope you ll find soon what exactly is the problem, because I know how irritating these things can be.

Averie @ Averie Cooks said... [reply]

you wont like what i have to say but you know i have said it before...i think you are playing with fire with this whole eating wheat stuff. i lived my life at your age thinking I could. wound up hurting/damaging my body FOREVER b/c I thought I could and "just a little wont hurt". make no mistake, wheat, spouted, not, cooked on a gold skillet or harvested by hand or organic or whatever...it's STILL WHEAT. You are intolerant. Your body is able to COMPENSATE which is what it is doing right now; long term, this will have a price. Girl I am saying this out of love and concern and I will probably shut up after this comment, but, you are playing with fire. You dont want to be my age and sh*tting blood b/c you ate wheat when your body was saying no.

Btw rage, emotional outburst, brainfog, moodiness are CLASSIC allergen exposure symtomes...kids that cant eat corn or wheat or dairy..when a child has food allergies and cant verablize it, they act out with those symptoms many times.

Ok I'll stop now. :)

JUST sending you LOVE & Concern honey!!!!

Sarena Shasteen - The Non-Dairy Queen said... [reply]

I would say it is strange, but with food allergies and intolerances...nothing is strange to me anymore. Honestly, it could be an allergic reaction to the wheat in since your system now has a good amount in it and it is now trying to digest it. Soy made me a beast too! I had a full blown reaction of a rash, breathing problems and a nasty attitude! I used to eat soy all the time when I stopped having dairy and meat. Try it again and see what happens. I am sure you are, but make sure you keep a journal of all of this. That is how I pinpointed my problems. I hope you are feeling a little more calm today.

Katie ♥ said... [reply]

Oh my , I was all excited reading and hoping that you ate that and It would be fine for you and then BOOM, you went crazy!!!!!!!!!! lol!!!

I am so sorry you had a problem with this, I wish I knew what to say or advice, but I don't, all I have to say is don't eat that again for sure!

Love you girl and hope you have a great day! xoxo

So sorry to hear about all your troubles. I have a friend with gluten intolerance and cannot eat sprouted wheat either -- even though her doctor suggested it.

Your best advice said... [reply]

my son reacted that way when he ate eggs...

Anonymous said... [reply]

Wow I've never heard that about sprouted grains before so I have no ideal why you reacted. That sucks! Well, at least you know that you should stay away from sprouted grains! I can't wait till you're able to take that test!!! It'll be such a great feeling for you to finally know!!!!

Have a great day gorgeous!!! This comment is a day later so hopefully you're feeling great again :)

What your mom said definitely makes sense. The whole point of eating sprouted grains is to increase their digestibility. I don't know much about your intolerancem, but if you didn't have it all your life, then it is something you have developed possibly through over-consumption. I would highly recommened removing the allergen from your diet for at least 3-4 weeks to let your body heal. Also, it is important to support and rebuild your digestive system through proper supplementation! If you give me more details I may be able to help you out (I am getting my certification as health coach and I have dealt with food allergies before as well, they are very frustrating!) I'm sorry you have to go through this!!

Maya said... [reply]

I'm so sorry to hear about your reaction! I know little about food allergies I just know that I like Ezekiel bread. Everyone's bodies react differently, or maybe there was a little cross contamination. Again, I wish I had some advice, but I do feel for you!

Unknown said... [reply]

wow, this sounds just like me. I tried sprouted wheat bread the other week too. I thought I could digest better than gluten. Weird side effects. I hate that feeling. So now I am back to GF bread and no corn/soy. Much better! Let me know what you find out from this. I think our bodies are the same, haha!

Lindsay @ http://pancakesnpajamas.blogspot.com/ said... [reply]

So weird girl. I'm sorry you had that kind of reaction. Thank goodness your mom is knowledgeable when it comes to allergies. Sending you lots of positive vibes to get this figured out. XOXO

Chelsea said... [reply]

Yikes, I'm sorry about your reaction girl! That's really odd that sprouted grains seem to have the opposite effect on you! But at least now you're closer to figuring our what sort of diet works for you!

Aimee said... [reply]

Wow that caught me off guard. I'm sorry I can't help but I hope you figure out what that was all about! Cross off sprouted grains noow.

wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas said... [reply]

You make me think every day about the fact that what works for one might not work for another. It's so important for people to realize that and not look for one definition of "healthy." I wish everyone would take such responsibility for figuring out what's right for their body! Imagine how much better everyone would feel!

Ashlei said... [reply]

Sprouted bread always set me off to - the tummy that is...I'd get really angry because of the bloating and horrible feeling. Maybe once your test is over go back to being GF or stay away from the sprouted. No clue why you had such a reaction though. I hope you figure it out!

Anonymous said... [reply]

You poor thing! I'm sorry you weren't able to tolerate it :(

Mary @ Bites and Bliss said... [reply]

Sorry you had such a strong reaction! I don't know if I can offer any help as I don't know much about allergies beyond the fact that they're cause when your body lacks the appropriate enzymes like you mentioned. :/

Madeline - Greens and Jeans said... [reply]

Oh yikes! That is scary stuff! From my days as a human biology major I would guess what your mom is saying is spot on. When the gluten is in a form that your body just passes and doesn't have to "work" on, it's a-okay. If it is in a form that you can actually absorb, that's where things get funky. I hope you find an answer soon! I will say, that I think it's great that you are taking the time to figure this out instead of always wondering "what if..."

hbobier said... [reply]

That's crazy!! I wish I could help, but I don't know too much about that.. :(

Jessie said... [reply]

Oh no, you poor thing, Kelsey! I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to sprouted wheat! It's true that sprouted wheat should give less of a reaction, but everybody is different, and it look like sprouted wheat, or some ingredient in the bread, or the wheat in combo with something else you ate did not agree with you :( Especially with combo foods, it's hard to pick out exactly what the problem is. I'm glad you're at least finding this out!

xoxo!

Justine said... [reply]

How dreadful!? I am so sorry to hear about that. I hope you're feeling better by now. I have never had a reaction like that to food. I wish I had some advise or suggestions or something, but I've no experience with GF lifestyles. I hope your day get's better! :)
(Maybe a sweet potato will make you feel better? ha)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I'm so sorry! I have absolutely no advice. I say go for a big ol' cinnamon roll. :)

Emily said... [reply]

Oh, how frustrating! Was it only the organic wheat berries that were sprouted or was the whole wheat flour from a sprouted grain, too? In other words, was all the wheat in the product considered sprouted? Just curious. :-)

Hope that you feel better soon...hang in there!

Ellen@FirednFabulous said... [reply]

Oh gosh, I can't imagine how frustrating this is for you! I'm clueless as far to help, but I hope you figure it out and feel better!

Laury@TheFitnessDish said... [reply]

YIKES, Kelsey!!! I agree with Averie up there...you are playing with fire. Maybe you shouldn't put your body through all of this! I know you thought it would be fine, since it was sprouted, and heard that GF/I peeps can take it, but if you have an allergy, your body is working over-time to try and digest it and process it...thus aging you and wearing your down! You are such a sweet snacking squirrel, I hate hearing that a little wrap made you enraged! That's really scary, and Averie's right, they are typical allergen symptoms! Your mom is one smart cookie, you are lucky to have her around! You are too though...I know you are trying to get to the bottom of all of your intolerance's, but it seems like scary stuff!!! I hope you feel better soon!!!!!!

xoxo

Krista said... [reply]

Sorry to hear you had such a violent reaction to the wraps! Yikes!

eatmovelove said... [reply]

Wow , that's crazy...hmmm...I have Ezekiel bread in my freezer now and you got me all freaked out!!! But ...couldn't you mood also be something other than food? Maybe your emotions? About somethng else...or about eating it? Honestly, if you are constantly thinking of it or worried about it or waiting for something to happen...it will happen. The mind has a POWERFUL effect on the body...and girl, I'd rather be pissed than bloated, dead and gross like I always feel :(...and yes, self-inflicted.

Hugs.
