Neighbors to the North

Happy 4th of July Weekend
from your Neighbors to the North!

I salute you with a patriotic bowl of kefir and berries :)

It's been really hectic around the city! It's tourist city, and we get a lot of Washington residents... and a few Californians, Mississippians, Texans, even Floridians!

Most of them hang out here. Especially since it was finally HOT today. Count on me to get a coffee thoughhmm I always go for the warmest drinks in summer!

Like every Saturday and Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. I got some more vegan take-out from Green Cuisine. I took a picture, then had to take another for you when I realized the lentil patty was covering up the curried black-eyed peas!

Tempeh in ginger-tamarind sauce, curried black-eyed peas, lentil patty, yams, ketchup, mustard, steamed and raw greens, salsa, arame seaweed, and spices

Later I snacked on my favorite Raw Organic Food Bar...

...continuing the snacking with organic green grapes!

Later I whipped up a quick kale, spinach, onion, and mustard wrap.

Oh and I picked up more Used Book steals!!!

Can't wait to dive right into these reads!

Question: Have you read any of these books?
Did you like them? Or is there a book you've been wanting to read and haven't yet?

I actually became a vegan a few years ago because of Skinny Bitch...yes, it is rather harsh but I liked it and it has some pretty good recipes in it and the second book, skinny bitch in the kitch. I also saw the author Rory Freedman talk about animal cruelty at vegfest this year too!

Those berries look so refreshing and I just got both of those at the farmer's market today! Hope you are having a lovely weekend lady!

HEY BEAUTIFUL!!!
happy 4th of july! LOVE your berries in honor of it!! actually- love all your eats!! I must try that vegan bar!

I've read Skinny Bitch. I was a fan of their writing style and no-nonsense advice. Although I'm not one to follow the vegan lifestyle, so some parts I really didn't get into... Either way, I did enjoy it. :)

Congrats on the new domain, girl! I'm actually trying to make the switch myself, but unfortunately, blogspot isn't as easy as wordpress with that sort of thing. Anyway, thanks for the July 4th wishes; your salute to the US look delicious! Oh, and I seriously need to visit you, not only because you seem super sweet, but also because your Green Cuisine meals have been tempting me for MUCH too long.

I read Skinny Bitch after becoming vegan. Like Claire (of A Fresh Dille), I saw Rory Freedman talk at the same vegfest. She was so sweet and I definitely believe the style of writing she uses is all in good fun, even though some people think it is way too harsh. I hope you enjoy it; I would love to talk to you about it once you're done. Oh, and my mom's husband decided to go vegetarian after hearing her talk. Good stuff!

Have a lovely day!

I love your patriotic bowl...even though you're Canadian lol. No reason you can't support the U.S...especially since you plan on moving there anyway!
The only book I read out of the 4 of those is Skinny Bitch. I know a lot of bloggers like this book and say it "changed their lives" or whatever...um, I don't know about that. Skinny Bitch is a pro-veganism book disguised as a diet book. It is a gimmick because they knew a diet book would sell more copies. I kind of like the snappy way they write and the no-nonsense tone...it is unique and amusing. But sometimes it goes TOO far and people who have any history of an eating disorder should probably steer clear or at least be aware that there are some provoking phrases in the book, such as "skinny=healthy".
Also, the meal suggestions include A LOT of processed soy products...which I don't think is necessarily healthy for anyone. So if someone were looking to start a vegan diet and read this book, they might think their only option is to eat veggie dogs for dinner every night. I don't know, I guess I have mixed feelings about the book...because I appreciate the research and the facts, but I don't like the dogmatic thinking.
I hope I didn't ruin it for you now haha...well it is a fast easy read so let me know what you think!
xoxo <3

Have never read any of the books you bought although I've seen Skinny Bitch around. Would love to hear your reviews on them once you're done. Hehe. No pressure to read them straight away though! Take your time. x)

Have a great weekend ahead hun!

lovin the red white and blue berries! And you are really making me want to try this Green Cuisine place.

I have read Skinny Bitch....fyi there is a very gross chapter about the slaughtering of animals. Don't read that part while eating!! It was an entertaining book overall. They basically just encourage everyone to become vegetarians and there is a lot of humor

Hey girl, just wanted to say thank you for your kind and sweet, sweet birthday wishes :)
Hope you´re having a great sunday!!

omg those books look so good. i want to read them!!
and kefir strikes again!! lol seriously considering buying that one day :)
p.s. thanks for your words on my last post... i think what you wrote was very true... i just only thought it subconsciously.

I've read Skinny Bitch, but did not like it at all. I thought the authors sounded snotty and rather extremist.

Happy 4th July!

I've read Skinny Bitch and was very turned off by it. I understand that the point was to present a take-no-excuses view about veganism, but the tone of the writing did NOT persuade me, it just made me angry and frustrated! I'll be curious to hear your reactions!

Krista said... [reply]

Skinny Bitch....there were parts of that book that made me cry. I haven't read any of the others, though.

Glad to hear it finally warmed up in Victoria. It's been gorgeous here, too. Enjoy your Sunday, Kelsey!!

The pictures of the berries and kefir is so bright, it's making my eyes pop :P

I've been meaning to read Skinny Bitch but haven't gotten around to it. Let me know how you like it!

Sarah said... [reply]

Hey there! Haven't read any of them but i'm interested in the one about prevention. I just bought Becoming Raw and so far it's awesome! x

Katie ♥ said... [reply]

Awwwwwwwww thanks for the july 4th wishes love!!!!

I saw those raw bars in the store and was going to buy one, are they yum?! And which flavor is your fave?

I always wanted to read that skinny bitch book but never bought it, I cant wait to hear what you think about it!

Have a great day love! xoxoxo

Hahaha I love how you practically live off of take out from Green Cuisine. I'm sure if I had that restaurant near me, I would do the same thing though! ;)

I've never read Skinny Bitch, but I've heard so much about it! I hope to get around to reading it this summer. Let us know what you think!

Heather Iacobacci-Miller said... [reply]

There's that take out again!! Breakfast looks so yummy and fresh. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Anonymous said... [reply]

your eats look so good!! I want kefir, haven't had it in a while :) Green cuisine looks fabulous as well.
I haven't read those books but the book "skinny bitch' kind of annoys me because all of my friends who have read it decide they are going to be vegan afterward and it only lasts about a week.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Haha, thanks girl. Love your patriotic shout out!

Thank you for the holiday wishes! Your eats look amazing! Congrats on moving the site! I hope you are having a great weekend!

I've read half of Skinny Bitch, but I didn't finish because I hated the tone of the author's writing. Bitch is extremely appropriate in the title.

I love how all of your interests lie in holistic healing and nutrition. There's honestly nothing that gets me more excited than learning about new things when it comes to health and nutrition, and it's always great to find like-minded people :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Your berries look so fresh and good! I've read the Skinny Bitch - I think you'll like it! :D

Anonymous said... [reply]

That is a sweet looking Starbucks. I haven't read a lot of health/food-oriented books. What is your favorite?

Anonymous said... [reply]

I love used books!! I always love going to the book store and flipping through them! I just got Ani Phyo's new book and can't wait to get to sit down and read it! :) Yep, I read through cookbooks!

Crystal said... [reply]

I have read Skinny Bitch, and while it wasn't the greatest thing I have ever read, it was part of the reason I decided to be a vegetarian.

I really want to read The Yoga Body Diet! Have a great Sunday. :)

HEAB said... [reply]

Mmm, I spy tempeh in that big bowl of goodness from Green Cuisine. Gosh, I love tempeh!!!

Thanks so much for your patriotic bowl of fruit + kefir. I had intentions of making something red, white, and blue today, but when I woke up, all I wanted was cereal. So, I shall live vicariously through you. :)

Love those organic food bars too - they are so chewy, like tootsie roll pops!

I've read the Ultra-Metabolism Diet by Dr. Hyman which I really liked. Not a huge fan of Skinny Bitch, but there were a few good parts.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Your vegan take-out always looks so freaking amazing and delicious! I want vegan take-out around here but it is currently nonexistent.

The only one of those books that I have read is the Skinny Bitch one and I liked it even though it was extremely over the top.

Christina said... [reply]

I really wanted to read Skinny Bitch but every time I went to the library it was checked out. I ended up getting their cookbook instead. Let us know how it is!

Anonymous said... [reply]

I tried to read Skinny Bitch. It made me want to scream.

Love the red white and blue berries :D

I'll be curious to hear what you think of "Skinny Bitch." I read it a few years ago and thought it had some good insights but it wasn't really my style.

Anonymous said... [reply]

Your food looks so fresh and delish, especially the grapes! I have heard good things about Skinny Bitch, but haven't read it myself.

Awww, thanks for the July 4th wishes my Canadian friend :-)

Love the Kefir and berries...so refreshing on a day like today, and festive for us July 4th patriots!

I read Skinny Bitch, none of the others..its pretty good..let us know how the others are!!!

oh, and I wanted to tell you..if you install Intense Debate...don't make the mistake I did (which is why all my comments were erasing)..make sure you disable comments on blogger..check the thing that says "new posts do not have comments" after you install intense debate...b/c all your comments will go through them! I was getting SO mad when I would get 10 ID comments, then they all would erase and go back to blogger comments...and the previous ones gone. Just a tip!!!!

Love your patriotic eats!! :) I love your lengthy comments, they are so great. I basically decided I'm going to fly and come visit you in Canada because that would be super cool! HAHA big foot doughnuts and chocolate dipped toes? I've never heard of such a thing!! That's so funny

Anonymous said... [reply]

Erm, can I just have one of everything you just ate? That all looks so delish, especially the curried black beans! I'm an English major...I always have a running list of books I want to read "when I find time" ;)

Anonymous said... [reply]

Hey! Just found your blog. I've only read bits of Skinny Bitch, but I also got the chance to see the author speak. She's got a great food philosophy and is HILARIOUS! I hope you like the book!

haha I so appreciate the patriotism :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

haha you are so cute!!! Love the breakfast :)

MJC said... [reply]

I love the red, white, and blue breakfast! I read and own a copy of Skinny Bitch. I honestly don't like the tone of the book (I'm already VERY well educated on the horrors of the meat industry and if I had to choose between eating meat and starving to death, I'd choose the latter), so I really didn't appreciate them sassing me throughout the book! LOL HOWEVER, so much of what they say is true, and I try to eat vegan as much as possible (although I doubt I'll ever give up cheese!). So it's still a good book to check out after all!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Your berry breakfast looks great! I recently read Skinny Bitch - it was enough to push me to a completely vegetarian (but not quite vegan) diet. I'll be interested to see what you think about it!

Kris said... [reply]

Mmmm starbucks!

I did enjoy the Skinny Bitch, but didn't like all their processed soy foods they were explaining to be good! Its not that good for you girls!

Love that raw bar....so.....freaking much!

xxoo

Anonymous said... [reply]

I enjoyed Skinny Bitch, it partially motivated me to become veg. Hope you had a great weekend Kelsey!

Anonymous said... [reply]

yOur bowl is so pretty!
I haven't read skinny bitch, I'm not sure I would like that style, I've heard its a bit harsh.

That bowl of fruit and kefir looks so delicious. Yum!! I hope you had a good weekend! - Vicky

I hear ya on the tourists. We live very close to the beach in SC and its been nutty around here as of late. I always get warm coffee beverages...regardless of the temperature :) I read Skinny Bitch. I thought it contained some great info.

Love the patriotic kefir!! :) And it sounds like you had a great weekend!

I've never read any of those books but have heard so many mixed reactions to Skinny Bitch. Interested to hear what you think!

Ruth said... [reply]

Happy Belated 4th of July!!!! I haven't read any of those books, but I have been wanting to read some of them. I can't believe you found them at a used book sale . . . I need to find me a used book sale :)

Anonymous said... [reply]

I've read Skinny Bitch, but wasn't really that keen on it, even though it's vegan - I found it a bit to aggressive?! Hm, also wasn't that keen on how much they stress processed products. I haven't read any of the others - they look good!
The vegan take out looks incredible :D
xxxx

I've heard Skinny Bitch is a pretty harsh book, so I've stayed away. Might read it at some point just to look at it with a critical eye. I used to be vegan, so it might be interesting to read their viewpoints.

Thanks for the July 4 well wishes!

Hi gorgeous girlie!!
LOVE the beautiful patriotic bowl of berries, thank you for the lovin' from up north! :)
I hope you have been having a great summer, reading poolside is one of my favorite relaxing activities. I have read Skinny Bitch, it's ok, I enjoyed the authors attitude but don't really agree with their "meal plan" (only fruit for breakfast!...no way!)
I can't wait to hear all your reviews!
have a great monday!
xoxo!

Anonymous said... [reply]

Yayy, I'm so happy to come read your posts! I've been CRAZY busy and haven't had time to read/comment. Btw, thanks for all your comments on my blog. They make my day! You're seriously the best. <3

That patriotic breakfast looks delish! Blueberries and raspberries are so beautiful.

You had Texan visitors?! If I had known I would've caught a ride up with them! lol. That would've been so cool. We could've enjoyed Green Cuisine and I could've shared my yummy samples with you. :P (I'm still coveting your Green Cuisine, btw. They need to come to Texas!!)

Mm, organic grapes. Have you ever tried them frozen? So good! I love that Raw Organic Food Bar. I bought the protein one a while back and it was wonderful! It was the only one that fit my criteria of high protein, vegan, all-natural, and relatively low in sugars. Awesome. :)

Unknown said... [reply]

Oh I would eat that salute up! Yumm. I have found that those raw food bars are the perfect pick me ups. Great flavor!

The vegan takeout box looks a lot like Whole Foods!

Does the Lentil patty taste like falafel?! It looks like it!! And I absolutely love, love, love falafel. <3

Fresh green grapes are delicious. Yours look awesome! I haven't read Skinny Bitch, but know of a lot of girls who have and swear by it.

Anonymous said... [reply]

I thought the box was Whole Foods as well---regardless, it is gorgeous! And so are the berries, nothing like fresh berries in the summertime.

I love used books and have to stop myself from buying so many when I go to the thrift store. I read Skinny Bitch but wasnt too impressed, I didn't like the authors style of writing.
